How to Choose a Pet Memorial Keepsake (A Calm, Practical Guide)

By Eidon, EveryBeloved · October 2026 · 6 min read

If you're reading this, you've probably lost someone with four legs, wings, or fins — or you're helping a friend who has. Choosing a keepsake is one of the first decisions after a loss, and doing it while grieving is hard. This guide exists to make that decision calmer: what the main kinds of keepsakes actually are, what each is good for, and the questions worth asking any store before you order.

The four main kinds of keepsakes

1. Photo pendants. A close-up of their face, set into a stainless steel pendant on a chain. This is the most personal option and usually the best value, because it captures them rather than a generic symbol — the expression you knew best, worn close every day.

2. Paw- or nose-print pieces. A clear photo of their actual print is reproduced on the pendant. The result is the print they really left — pads, grooves and all. Ideal if you have a good print photo (a clay or ink impression made at the vet, photographed in daylight, is perfect).

3. Keepsake chambers. A small hollow pendant with a screw-top cap that holds a pinch of fur or ashes. Two honest notes: good stores ship these empty and you fill them at home — never mail cremated remains to anyone — and the chamber holds a small amount, not all of them.

4. Name-and-date pieces. A simple bar or disc with their name and the years you had together. Quiet, understated, easy to wear every day — and the right choice if "memorial jewelry" feels like too much and you just want their name close. For talking birds, the words they said can go on it too.

Which one is right for you?

  • You want to see their face every day → a photo pendant.
  • You have a beautiful paw-print photo → a print piece.
  • You kept a lock of fur (or ashes) → a chamber piece you fill yourself.
  • You want something subtle → a name bar.
  • You had a talking bird → a bar with their words — a keepsake almost no shop offers.

Questions to ask any store before ordering

  • What is it actually made of? Cheap plated jewelry looks fine on day one and wears within a year — the last thing you want from something meaningful. Ask the store directly, and look for close-up photos of the real finish rather than renders.
  • Will I see my piece before it ships? A good store QC-checks and photographs your piece before it leaves, and sends you the photos.
  • How long does it actually take? Made-to-order pieces need a few days plus 7–12 days for tracked international shipping. Any store promising 3-day worldwide delivery is guessing.
  • What happens if it arrives wrong or damaged? A clear refund policy — and ideally one that doesn't make you pay $30 to ship a $34 item back.
  • Will they tell you if your photo won't work well? A good store checks your photo before your piece is made and tells you honestly.

One more thing: take your time

A keepsake can wait a week. Grief can't. If you're not ready to choose, wait — the pieces will still be here, and a decision made calmly is a decision you'll be happy with for years. If it helps to talk it through first, message us; we'd rather answer questions than rush an order.
